Investing in Healthier Communities

We’re leveraging the knowledge, experience and talents of community organizations and partners to address social and economic factors that influence health in our communities.

With our Blue Impact℠ major grant program and other community-based efforts, we're focused on social and economic drivers of health in five key areas:

  • Optimal health outcomes
  • Locally defined health solutions
  • Economic opportunity and stability
  • Nutrición
  • Vecindario y entorno de construcción

As a health insurer, we recognize the importance of closing gaps in preventive care to help people achieve their best health.

This extends beyond our members and into our communities with programs and investments focusing on immunizations, diabetes care, cardiovascular care, early detection cancer screenings, behavioral health, and maternal and infant health.

Through the Blue Impact major grant program, we invested in organizations working to close these gaps. New Mexico Alliance for School Based Healthcare, for example, is providing evidence-based interventions and training initiatives to address behavioral health needs in New Mexico schools.

Our Care Van® mobile health program works with public health departments and others to bring no-cost immunizations and other preventive services to communities across New Mexico. With Blue Impact grantee Southern New Mexico Diabetes Outreach, the Care Van program is helping provide diabetes education, support and screening.  In 2024, the Care Van program held more than 150 events, reaching more than 15,900 New Mexicans.

Soluciones de salud definidas localmente

Organizations embedded in our communities are often best able to meet the diverse health and human service needs of the people who live there.

In August 2024 we opened the Blue Door Neighborhood CenterSM, a hub for health and wellness located in Albuquerque’s South Valley.

The BDNC helps community members learn, connect and focus on their health with classes, workshops and resources tailored to hyperlocal needs. The center hosted more than 100 events from September through the end of the year.

Our 2024 Blue Impact major grant program is advancing many innovative initiatives specific to New Mexico populations.

One is the Zuni Youth Enrichment Project, which is providing sport leagues, art apprenticeships, outdoor recreation and other programming to help young people on the Zuni Reservation develop healthy habits and a sense of belonging to their community and culture.

Oportunidad y estabilidad económica

Access to jobs. Opportunities to grow. A stable income. Meeting these essential needs provides a foundation for health and well-being.

With Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief organization, we invested in workforce development at Roadrunner Food Bank in Albuquerque.

The Roadrunner program targets veterans, first-time job seekers, people with disabilities and people who have been justice-involved. Participants learn new skills and develop an employment history while helping provide food to New Mexicans in need.

With the Blue Impact major grant program, we’re helping community organizations provide the stability and opportunities that allow people to thrive.

One of these organizations is Albuquerque's Barrett House shelter, which accommodates as many as 40 unhoused women and children for up to six months. Case managers help women learn to budget, renew identification cards, enroll children in daycare and school, access job training, get health care and apply for health insurance and housing benefits.

Vecindario y entorno de construcción

We’re investing in efforts to connect people to affordable healthy housing, transportation and physical activity.

We’ve also continued our collaboration with National Fitness Campaign to help bring outdoor Fitness Courts® to New Mexico communities. A court built in 2024 on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University in Portales is within a 10-minute walk for more than 2,000 people.

The Blue Impact major grant program is funding other community-based efforts to strengthen neighborhood assets. One grant is helping YES Housing's Healthy Living program expand its reach in the Hobbs area to house lower income families and elderly residents. YES Housing builds quality, affordable housing and connects individuals to job training, financial literacy courses, fitness classes, health screenings and other social services.

An investment in Rebuilding Together Sandoval County will continue to help provide free home safety repairs and medical modifications to enhance the health and well-being of low-income veterans, older residents and families.

Nutrición

With grants, community outreach, volunteer events and other avenues, we’re collaborating with community-based partners to reduce hunger and improve access to nutritional food.

Our Tribal Health Initiative, in collaboration with The Community Pantry food distribution center in McKinley and Cibola counties, helped provide 800 food boxes to members of the Navajo Nation and Acoma, Laguna or Zuni Pueblos who are expectant mothers or have diabetes or high blood pressure.

Six organizations receiving Blue Impact major grant funding in 2024 are expanding access to nutritious food in ways that meet the needs of their local communities.

One is Casa De Peregrinos, which is buying fresh produce for distributions to pop-up stands serving low-income families in Doña Ana County. Fraction Farms in Albuquerque is buying materials like seed, fertilizer and irrigation supplies to grow crops in three cycles, potentially increasing the amount of food donated from 15,000 pounds to 25,000 pounds.
